North County – October 9th

October 18, 2010

Last Saturday, we headed North and hit some hotspots along the coast.  I believe this was the first time that I’ve ever seen sun at Oso Flaco.   It was still early for the wintering ducks, but there was a small group of Cinnamon Teal and several Eared Grebes at the lake.  We even managed to find one American White Pelican and a lone Osprey at the far side of the lake.  However, the highlight was the nearly tame Raccoons we ran into.  I know that they mean trouble for the nesting Least Terns, but they are so darn cute!  After Oso Flaco, we headed up to Morro Bay to look for the Sea Otters.  Initially, it appeared that they weren’t around, but eventually they swam over to check us out.

Morro Bay Sea Otters

May 31, 2009

Here are photos of the very cooperative group of sea otters floating in the bay.  I was really glad to see them so close to shore, since they were the primary reason for stopping there.  It would have also been nice to see the Peregrines too.  Maybe next time.

Morro Bay Ground Squirrels

May 31, 2009

The next stop on last weekend’s trip was Morro Bay.  A lot of kids were there feeding the ground squirrels and completely ignoring the group of sea otters floating near shore.  Completely habituated (i.e dependent) to people, the squirrels would walk right up to you and expect handouts.  Other highlights of the stop were watching a Pelagic Cormorant fish in the bay and a Pigeon Guillemont preen.  I was only able to get record photos of these birds, so will have to go back again and try again.
