Campus Point – October 8th

October 15, 2010

More and more shorebirds have been making their annual trek south and I figured it was time to head to the beach with the camera.  Last Friday I grabbed my backup camera and went down to Campus Point for  a quick look before work.  I was rewarded by finding hundreds of Terns roosting on the beach and rocks at the point.  Getting a good shot of them at the point was pretty much impossible due to the backlighting.  Instead, I focused on the birds resting on the east facing beaches.  The early morning sun made for some great light.

Down South

August 4, 2010

Early (really early) on Sunday, we drove down to Irvine on a fool’s errand.  However, the morning started on a positive note and we saw a Barn Owl hunting as we left the neighborhood.  After detouring for some coffee, we arrived bright and early and started to look around.  It’s always nice to get out of town and explore someplace different.  The first thing we noticed were the rabbits, which are larger than the Brush Rabbits up here, and are some sort of cottontail.  Most of the birds we saw are commonly seen up here too, but we did have a few nice finds: American Avocet and Wood Ducks.  However, we weren’t expecting to see a young White-tailed Kite perching on a small sycamore in riparian habitat.  I suspect it was moving through the area after being pushed away by its parents.

While we didn’t find what we were looking for, I did manage to take a few images that I’d like to share.  There was a somewhat cooperative Green Heron, a very tolerant Anna’s Hummingbird, and an adult Black-crowned Night Heron was nice enough to pose out in the open.  I think the next impromptu road trip will have to head either towards the mountains or along the coast.  Decisions, decisions…

Birds of June

June 26, 2010

June is a great month for bird photography in Santa Barbara, and most other places around the country.  It is the middle of breeding season and many of them are either courting, nesting and being territorial, or tending to recent fledglings.  I haven’t gone out of my way to photograph a variety of birds this month, but the birds seem to be doing a great job of finding me.  Sometimes you’re just in the right place at the right time.  Here are some highlights from the month.

Flying into March

March 2, 2010

Wow, I can’t believe it’s already March!  It seems like 2010 just got started and here we are, less than two weeks away from Daylight Savings Time already.  Oh, if you’re a fan of seeing the sun in the morning, I have bad news for you.  Once we turn our clocks back, the sun will rise later than it did in the dead of Winter.  (At least that’s what my resident “Date and Time” expert has told me.)  In any case, here are some recent bird images to go along with the snappy title of this post.

Less Fur, More Feather

January 13, 2010

In case anyone’s wondering, I still find the time to photograph things that aren’t bobcats.  Here are a few recent photos that I like.

Florida – Merritt Island II

December 13, 2009

On our way to Viera Wetlands, we dropped by Merritt Island to look for bobcats again.  We got there early on a weekday and the place was quite empty, with only a few other diehard photographers and birders.  As I previously mentioned we had no luck with the bobcats but we did see a lot of interesting birds.  The best find of the morning was an American Bittern followed by flybys of a Wood Stork and Roseate Spoonbill.  We also found a large group of Black Vultures feeding on a wild boar carcass.  I don’t think I’ll forget the smell any time soon!

Big Bird Backlog

October 25, 2009

I’ve been sitting on a ton of great bird photos that I just haven’t had the time to post.  Unfortunately I can’t post all of my favorites but here is a small selection from the last couple weeks.

~As always, you can click on the individual photos to view them larger~
