The White-tailed Kites Pair

The local pair of White-tailed Kites have been busy making preparations for their next batch of chicks.  The male has been patching up the old nest and bringing food to his mate.  Well, he doesn’t always bring it to her.  Sometimes she needs to take matters in her own “talons” and steal it from him.  There have been some other unmistakeable signs that egg laying should happen some time soon.

  1. Nice Circle of Life photos. Are kites considered hawks or falcons?

    Hi Scott,
Thanks for the comment. Kites are considered hawks. I need to look back in the archives from last year, but it is my recollection that this would be very early for them to start egg laying.

  3. I was wondering about the time myself but you live in a more temperate climate than I do so wasn’t sure.

These are fantastic images, Barry! I have never been able to get close to kites. They are remarkably elegant birds though, I think. Really great to see their interactions as well!
